The Affects of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 on The Aviation Industry

Malaysian Airlines Flight 370

It is not often in the aviation industry that an incident can not be explained. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) is one of those cases where experts in the industry can't conclusively say what happened to it. There are several theories regarding what happened but nothing is 100%. The tenth anniversary of the accident just passed and experts are still looking for the crash site so they can hopefully find answers on what happened.

How has MH370 Changed the Industry?

"The result is a long-term plan called the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS), which uses innovations in technology and communications to better watch the planes we fly on... You may remember that the reason the world lost track of MH370 was because its transponders mysteriously stopped transmitting the airliner's location about three minutes after the jet's final radio call" (Patterson, 2019, para. 4). As mentioned previously, GADSS was developed in direct response to MH370 and Air France Flight 447 (AF447).

The idea is that GADSS will require large aircraft, which weigh over 60,000 pounds on takeoff, to track their own position every 15 minutes. GADSS will also transmit an aircraft's position in one-minute intervals if it is in a position that would directly result in an accident which is known as Autonomous Distress Tracking (ADT). An aircraft's position will be transmitted and it won't require any input by the flight crew. It works because aircraft will have transponders placed inside of them and will work similarly to GPS. GADSS was originally planned to be implemented by 2021 but was delayed until 2023. Companies such as Boeing and Airbus could not meet the demand to change their line production by 2021 so they made ICAO delay implementation until 2023.

The Future of the Industry

In conclusion, GADSS was developed and implemented throughout the aviation industry to provide experts one thing that they were missing during MH370 which was information. After MH370's last radio call, it gets a little difficult to find the exact location of the jet's debris in the ocean. With the implementation of GADSS, the hope is that in the future if an accident like this occurs again, it will be found so experts can figure out what went wrong.

  1. Shawn,
I am sure you have heard recently they may reopen MH370 search due to a private company approaching the Malaysia government with potential new evidence to the location of the Boeing 777 (Shalvey, 2024).
The information provided accurately highlights the significant impact of the MH370 incident on the aviation industry, particularly in terms of enhancing aircraft tracking and safety measures. The Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) emerged as a response to the disappearance of MH370 and other incidents like Air France Flight 447. The delays in implementing GADSS due to challenges faced by aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus in adapting their production lines further emphasize the complexities involved in implementing such significant changes across the industry.

    1. I did recently see that they were going to reopen the search for the aircraft. I know there has been a lot of pressure on the Malaysian government by plenty of people to reopen the case. Hopefully, they can find the aircraft and get answers to the questions about the accident for the past decade. With the implementation of GADSS hopefully, the aviation industry will prevent a case from this occurring again. Thanks for responding.
